The International Development Secretary, known in full as the Secretary of State for International Development, is an official within the Government of the United Kingdom and head of the Department for International Development. The office is a cabinet-level position. The position is not currently in use.
The two main responsibilities of the International Development Secretary are to promote development overseas, particularly in developing countries, and administer overseas aid. Some of the global tasks which this involves include: offering humanitarian assistance after natural disasters and during conflicts, improving water supply and sanitation, ensuring as many people as possible have access to education and healthcare, tackling diseases, protecting the environment, and reducing poverty.
The International Development Secretary often works closely with the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs due to the overlap between their respective roles but it may also work with several other Ministers to develop strategies in certain areas.
